Most polypropylene record sleeves are made from two flat sheets of plastic that are heat-sealed together along both sides and the bottom.
The downside is that every time you slide a record in or out, those side seams take the stress.
Polypropylene is naturally rigid—that's one of the reasons it's so crystal clear. But that rigidity also means the heat-sealed seam becomes the weakest part of the sleeve. Over time, every insertion, every removal, and every trip on and off the shelf puts more strain on that same point.
Eventually, the seam loses.

A split seam might seem like a minor annoyance, but it's more than cosmetic.
Once the side opens up, the album jacket is no longer fully protected. Dust can enter. Jacket edges become exposed. Corners begin rubbing against neighboring records. Little bits of shelf wear accumulate over months and years.
Ironically, the sleeve stops doing the very job it was meant to do.

Side-sealed sleeves are easier and less expensive to manufacture.
For decades, that's been the industry standard. Most manufacturers never invested in a different production process because the existing method was "good enough."
But good enough isn't always the best solution.
A Better Way to Build a Sleeve
